Pondering a Specialty Plate

I've been thinking since I got Kid Charlemagne (2008 Honda Fit SPORT -- not that I'm bragging, I'm actually in love...) that I'd really like to get a specialty plate of some kind.

I'm really not interesting in a FSU plate or a "Trees are Cool" plate, though I do feel bad that it apparently ranked 109 in sales in 2007 -- and was beat out by NASCAR (G.O.B.: "COME ON!"). I'd like to get one that supports, ya know, wildlife. Mainly because animals are terrible about fundraising -- they just don't have the people skills. Plus I try not to put too much on my car that would make someone want to key it. I mean, who looks at a "Save the Manatees" plate and thinks "wow, that person is an ASSHOLE"?

JERK ALERT

But which to choose?? Do you even know how many specialty plates there are to choose from??

No?

Well let me break it down for you.*

Specialty Catagories:

20 Environmental Plates

44 Miscellaneous Plates
9 Professional Sports Plates

36 University Plates
Source: http://www.flhsmv.gov/dmv/specialtytags/

What this really means for me is that I have 20 choices, but I can't help but feel somewhat shallow. Some of the environmental plates are, well, ugly. I'm only human.

Also, I don't think I should get the sea turtles plate because my mom already has that and I believe in sharing the wealth.

Oh well, I still have 19 to choose from. Wish me luck.

*All numbers are +/- 1 since it's nearly 2AM and I should most certainly be sleeping. Except for the "9" -- I can still count to 9, jerks.**
**Sorry about the jerks thing, I know Genet is the only one who reads this anyway...

Hellboy II: The Golden Army

Ken and I see a lot of movies. Just a few days ago we saw another one: Hellboy II: The Golden Army

This film was one of the many films I've been waiting all summer to finally see which is probably why I was slightly disappointed with it after its viewing.

It's not that I didn't think it was entertaining because it was.
And it's not that I didn't think it was visually interesting because it was that as well.

What it wasn't was as good as the first one.

The humor in the first felt more natural, more propelled by the banter between the characters. In Golden Army, more than a few scenes meant to be funny, seemed to linger well beyond where they needed to in order for the humor to be achieved. The funny felt forced which is unfortunate considering the cast and their previous chemistry.

Also, as a friend of mine pointed out, Selma Blair's character Liz had an extra level of whine to her that seemed to appear from no where. Sure she has a secret, and sure she's upset, but what happened? Is borderline annoying a sign of growing up?

And is it just me or does Abe Sapien sound like a completely different person??

Maybe I'm just being too picky but this installment in the Hellboy series felt a bit too much like a comic book: completely flat.

Overall: B-

A New Beginning

After four odd years of having a livejournal, I've decided to leave that life behind for the allure that blogger provides.
A new chapter of this life deserves its own blog and there you have it.

My new life starts on August 18th where I will be a sitting in a workshop, learning to teach science to people just a few years younger than myself. I'll be a TA in the Biology department come next fall and the thought of that is both terrifying and altogether, well, fun! My goal is simple; facilitate learning in the same manner that the excellent TA's in my past did for me. I figure if I can pull off even half of that then I should be OK at least for this first year.

I will be a new graduate student in the department, working on a Masters degree. And if my undergraduate career was a window into this next educational step, it appears as though I'll be working with dinosaurs, to put it simply. Which is great because it's what I've wanted to do since I was 12. It will just be time now to step it up a notch.

So this is my first post to blogger. I don't really know where this will go but I do know that I like a few things. I like music, movies, some television, museums, surfing the web, dreaming, thinking about my future, thinking about my past, and every now and then, I like to share this information.

And that's all this really is: my own personal conduit to share information. Welcome!
